My name is Nicole Absher. I launched my floral design company ephemera in 2019 and have been a florist for over a decade now. We're based out of NYC but love to travel for work doing destination weddings. Originally a painter I was attracted to floral design through a study of ikebana. Later I discovered the paintings of the Dutch Golden Era. I would say my work is informed by both but also at it's core I'm really inspired by nature in it's raw truest form. Something wild, unruly and untameable inspires me the most. When working with our wedding clients I'm attracted to bold designs, playful colors, rich textures and soft ethereal gestures to tell love stories.
The name ephemera is a nod to the word’s origin. Meaning something that is short lived, lasting for only one day. Fleeting beauty like the autumn leaves falling. Or perhaps fleeting encounters like your daughter’s wedding night when loved ones gather from the far corners of the world and may never be in the same room again.
But the name also takes root in a quote I read from the work of Carl Jung in my early twenties. When I first encountered the word ephemeral.
“Life has always seemed to me like a plant that lives on its rhizome. Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The part that appears above ground lasts only a single summer. Then it withers away—an ephemeral apparition. When we think of the unending growth and decay of life and civilizations, we cannot escape the impression of absolute nullity. Yet I have never lost a sense of something that lives and endures underneath the eternal flux. What we see is the blossom, which passes. The rhizome remains.” - Carl Jung
A great sense of optimism can be felt from that quote and that optimism inspired me to create a floral design company. ephemera is a beckoning for us to ‘live in the moment’ but ephemera is also platform designed to endure. We believe in sustainability for planet earth, whether it’s sustainably grown flowers, reducing waste and plastics, connecting clients with donations services for their flowers after weddings. The most important thing is our focus on making our working environment sustainable for employees. When you hire us, it's not just our vision but a well coordinated team to execute it.
