BOSTON HAYMARKET FLORAL VENDORS

Beginning

During the mid-1800s to early 1900s botanic vendors would sell their florals in the Haymarket alongside other vendors selling fruits, vegetables and other foods.

ORGANIZED

In 1892 the Boston Flower Exchange became a wholesale flower market, which enabled local growers to sell their products from an enclosed, rented space. This provided a superior alternative to selling from the open-air Haymarket, as it allowed vendors to operate in a more controlled environment.

WHOLESALE ONLY!

In 1941, following a petition by local florists, the Boston Flower Exchange became wholesale only, with admission granted only to those with a badge.

New England Flower Exchange

A vast majority of vendors doing business at the Boston Flower Exchange have relocated north to Chelsea, Massachusetts, where, in 2017, the New England Flower Exchange opened on 260 2nd Street.
